Autumn 2008 – What happened to the Summer?

Autumn 2008

After an extremely wet and windy Summer, Autumn is upon us once again – Summer seemed to be over in the blink of an eye and already the nights are drawing in and the mornings are becoming darker with each passing day.

As it gets colder outside at this time, now is a good time to think about buying a Dehumidifier, you might start to notice condensation appearing on your windows over the next few weeks – this is because it’s cold outside and the moisture in the air is attracted to the cold air near your windows.

Remember, if you do use a dehumidifier make sure you buy one that has some type of 'Smart Control' – these units are much easier to operate as they operate only when required and will not take too much moisture out of the air.

Winter Weather

Winter 2007

The weather at the moment is ideal for condensation. When the outside temperatures are lower, condensation will occur at lower relative humidity in the home. If you find that you are using a dehumidifier in your home and you are still getting condensation don’t worry. Dehumidifiers don't remove (nor should they) all the moisture in the air, hence even changes such as running a bath will cause some condensation to form, but it will always be less than if you didn’t use a dehumidifier. The damage from condensation occurs when your home is continuously exposed to moisture in the air, day in day out.

Smart Control

Smart control works on trends rather than events so when there is a sudden change in weather, it will take a bit of time to acclimatize to this change. You will need to switch on the continuous mode for a few hours or even a day until things return to normal.

2 Things to remember this Winter...

DO place the unit centrally
DON’T situate it near a heater

Wettest Summer on Record

Summer 2007

With the Met Office declaring June 2007 as the wettest June since records began and with more rain to follow, it is no surprise that moisture levels are through the roof. Excessive amounts of rain, along with intermittent sunny days and high levels of humidity, have aggravated condensation and damp levels in homes across the country.

With tens of thousands of people across the country being evacuated from their homes due to floods in June and July, water damage and damp seem to have escalated into an epidemic.

Once structural damage has been evaluated in flood damaged homes and cellars, dehumidifiers can be used to dry out affected areas in preparation for cosmetic repairs.

In less extreme situations, dehumidifiers can be used to protect the home, preventing damage such as mould, damp and interstitial condensation, which also aggravates asthma and arthritis.

Traditionally, dehumidifiers can be used in the summer to alleviate hay fever, however, this year we are experiencing a lower than average pollen count, making some people happy with the current weather conditions!

According to the Met Office, there are signs of change in the weather for August, with most regions experiencing some periods with above average temperatures. Above average precipitation is likely to continue through July and at the beginning of August, with drier than average conditions expecting at the end of August to September. The combination of rain and above average temperatures would make now a good time to protect your health and home and investing in a dehumidifier.
